• first isolation : 1950s, child

• “Enteric Cytopathic Human Orphan” - 29 serotypes

• highly infectious, fecal contamination

• leading cause of acute febril illness in infants and young children, most common cause of aseptic meningitis, respiratory illnesses, rash occasional conjunctivitis and paralytic disease

• infection after birth causes severe systemic diseases and high mortality, mimic symptoms by other bacterial vand viral infections
