- interaction between MAPK in modules, whose specific conformation is not required for organization of the MAPK module
- increases local concentration of Pks
- allow precise regulation via complex kinetic properties
- prevent activation by irrelevant stimuli
- provide spatial and temporal control of MAPK signaling
- disadvantage: may act as a poor signal amplifier
